Thursday, July 03rd, 2008

hi all
what with all these international games festivals things have been a bit quiet on the iglab front. But to make up for that we have a busy summer of games, experimentation and fun ahead…

iglab#5 will be at 7:30 on tue the 15th of july the the Pervasive Media Studio and for the first time we’ll be playing nice with the good people of dorkbot in a cooperative event

This iglab will be a special event. We will be giving an introduction to street/pervasve games so we’ll be playing some iglab favorites and some games that we think exemplify the sector including: the comfort of strangers,  the lost sport of olimpia,  hypSync and OMMRPG(the Korean laser - mirror game)

As usual can you please sign up so i know how much beer to buy

iglab board games special 10th july 630 PM Studio

Wednesday, July 02nd, 2008

finally some summer weather with evenings fit to relax and play

so to ease our way on through this summer there will be an iglab board game special. This is really due to popular demand.

were starting in with a game designed by our very own Phil Stenton Head of HP Labs

heres what he has to say about his game

The event will be at the Pervasive Media Studio on July 10th starting at 6.30pm.

Pizza will be provided. The boardgame in question is one Phil has been working on (on and off) over the last year.

The theme is horseracing but this is not the betting game you’d expect from an ex-bookie. In fact, it is not about betting at all. Players will race and develop their horses over three races on different course with the intention of acquiring enough form points to qualify for a final 4th race, the Epsom Derby over 12f, the blue ribbon of European racing.

The game is for any number but works best with 12-24 players. Your skill in the saddle should win over outrageous fortune. Racing decisions will be yours as you balance your horse’s movement and position. Will you bide your time at the back of the field and come with a late run or will you make the running to draw the stamina out of the other horses?

Between each race you will improve your horse in the hope of improving your chances. Did you get boxed in and have cards to spare or did you hit the front too soon and run out of steam? How you ran last time might inform your choices.

There will be a bottle of Champagne for the winner of the Epsom Derby.

if you want to come along please sign up here (or there’ll be no pizza for You)

these board game specials are extra iglab events and we’ll be holding them on an on demand basis so let me know if you want more

sneaks and liggers

Abstract: This is snakes and ladders in a car park. Climb up the stairs, Slide down the slopes…

Objective: to collect a full set of coloured cards and exit the car park.

Ruleset: Players start in the middle of the car park Grey level( The levels of Trenchard st car park are colour coded) . There are coloured cards distributed on all the floors of the car park. Players are only allowed to collect cards on a level they already have a coloured card for. Use the stairs to go up only and only go down the slopes. if you dont have a colour card for a level you come to you must keep going up or down until you reach a level you have acces to or you reach the top/bottom at which point you can change direction.

Aditionally, there are two “Blaggers” walking around the car park. they each have a set of bells tied to their leg so you can hear them coming. As they move around they distribute more of the coloured cards so you want to get close to them, but not too close. If they see you youve been blagged and they get to take all the colour cards youve collected.

The first person/ team to collect all the cards shouts Dulux and makes their way to the exit to claim thier prize…

Set Up: Several dozen small coloured cards, Two sets of bells, a suitable car park, a Boozy drink for the winner.

Location: Played in a multi story car park but rules can be moded to suit other locations.

Players: >10

Duration: 20-30 mins
